What It Is

Arthrospira platensis is a spiral-shaped cyanobacterium that grows naturally in alkaline lakes in tropical and subtropical regions. The Aztecs harvested it from Lake Texcoco as tecuitlatl; the Kanembu people of Chad still harvest it from Lake Kossorom as dihé, drying it into thin cakes. The organism predates plants by 3 billion years.

Industrially, spirulina is now grown in shallow paddleweel-stirred outdoor ponds or, increasingly, in closed photobioreactors. The economics make it the highest protein-yield-per-acre crop on the planet — 20 times the protein output of soybean. It was the original NASA-considered space agriculture organism precisely because of that yield, and because nothing else photosynthesizes complete protein like a cyanobacterium.

Source Matters — Contamination Map

Spirulina is a bioaccumulator. The wrong source delivers heavy metals and cyanobacterial toxins along with the protein:

  • Wild-harvested from polluted lakes (Klamath Lake, some Chinese sources) — risk of microcystin contamination from co-blooming toxic cyanobacteria like Microcystis.
  • Cheap pond-grown Asian product — heavy metal load can exceed safe limits.

How It Works

Spirulina's effect comes from a combination of dense, bioavailable protein, the blue pigment phycocyanin, plus a constellation of carotenoids and essential fatty acids. The molecular weight of the medicine is real and measurable.

Four Mechanisms

Phycocyanin COX-2 inhibition

The blue pigment phycocyanin is a selective COX-2 inhibitor with potency comparable to celecoxib in animal models. This is the headline anti-inflammatory mechanism and the molecular basis for spirulina's benefit in allergic rhinitis, arthritis, and exercise inflammation.

Contraindications & Cautions

  • Phenylketonuria (PKU): Contains phenylalanine. Absolute contraindication.
