What It Is
Kelp is a generic term for several genera of large brown algae that grow in shallow coastal waters. The medicinally important species are Laminaria digitata(Atlantic kombu), L. japonica (the kombu of Japanese cuisine, now reclassified as Saccharina japonica), and Ascophyllum nodosum(North Atlantic bladderwrack-adjacent species, common in supplements).
Kelp concentrates iodine from seawater at thousands of times the ambient concentration. A single gram of dried L. japonica can deliver 1,500-2,500 micrograms of iodine — far above the 150 mcg RDA, and approaching the 1,100 mcg tolerable upper limit set by the U.S. Institute of Medicine.
Why Sourcing Decides Everything
Kelp's great virtue is that it concentrates from seawater. Its great risk is the same fact:
- • Iodine variability — different kelp species and harvest sites differ by an order of magnitude. Buy product with iodine assayed per batch.
- • Arsenic accumulation — particularly Hizikia fusiforme (hijiki), which is banned in several jurisdictions for inorganic arsenic. Avoid hijiki entirely.
- • Heavy metal load from contaminated waters — Fukushima-zone Pacific harvests are scrutinized; Atlantic Maine and Iceland harvests are generally cleaner. Always look for heavy-metal-tested product.

How It Works
Two completely separate medicines live in the same plant: an iodine delivery system for the thyroid, and a fiber matrix for the gut.
Four Mechanisms
T4 (thyroxine) contains four iodine atoms; T3 contains three. The sodium-iodide symporter pulls dietary iodine into the thyroid follicle, where thyroid peroxidase incorporates it into thyroglobulin. No iodine, no thyroid hormone.
