What It Is

Vidanga (Embelia ribes) is a climbing shrub native to India, producing small berries that look like black pepper. It's mentioned in the earliest Ayurvedic texts (Charaka Samhita, Sushruta Samhita) as "Krimighna", destroyer of worms.

The key compound is embelin, a benzoquinone that's directly toxic to intestinal parasites. Unlike neem which starves parasites slowly, vidanga kills them outright, making it the go-to for active infections.

How It Works

  • Direct vermicidal: Embelin paralyzes and kills intestinal worms on contact
  • Digestive fire: Ayurveda says vidanga "kindles agni", improves digestion, creating a hostile environment for parasites
  • Carminative: Reduces gas and bloating that often accompany parasitic infections
  • Mild laxative: Helps expel dead parasites without harsh purging

Traditional Use

Charaka Samhita:Lists vidanga first among all "Krimighna" (anti-worm) herbs. Prescribed for roundworms, tapeworms, and threadworms.

Classical formulas: Vidangadi Churna (vidanga + other herbs), Krimikuthara Rasa (vidanga + minerals), Vidanga Leha (vidanga paste with honey).

Traditional preparation: Often combined with honey and taken on empty stomach for maximum absorption. The slight pungency is considered essential to its action.

Dosing Protocol

Powder (Traditional)

1-3g powder mixed with honey, taken on empty stomach, morning and evening.

Capsules

500-1000mg, 2x daily before meals. Look for standardized embelin content.

Duration

7-21 day cycles for active infections. Can repeat after 2-week break. Use with triphala to ensure elimination.

Contraindications

  • • Pregnancy, embelin has abortifacient properties
  • • Breastfeeding, insufficient safety data
  • • Children under 5, dose carefully with practitioner guidance
  • • High Pitta conditions, can aggravate heat-related issues
