What It Is
Triphala ("three fruits") is equal parts Amalaki (Indian gooseberry), Bibhitaki, and Haritaki. Each fruit has distinct properties, but together they create a balanced formula that cleanses without depleting, regulates without dependency.
This is the formula Ayurveda says you could take for life. Unlike senna or cascara which create dependency, triphala actually strengthens digestive function over time. It's a tonic, not just a laxative.
How It Works
- →Amalaki: Cooling, high vitamin C, supports Pitta dosha. Antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, rejuvenative.
- →Bibhitaki: Astringent, drying, supports Kapha dosha. Removes excess mucus, tones intestinal walls.
- →Haritaki: Warming, cleansing, supports Vata dosha. The primary laxative component, but gentler than senna.
- →Together: The balance means it's appropriate for all body types and doesn't create dependency or imbalance.
Traditional Use
Charaka Samhita:States that taking triphala daily for one year will cause all diseases to disappear. Called "Rasayana", a rejuvenating tonic.
Ayurvedic saying:"No mother? Do not worry, so long as you have triphala." Meaning it cares for the body as a mother cares for a child.
Modern research: Studies show antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and adaptogenic properties. Improves gut microbiome composition.
Dosing Protocol
Powder (Traditional)
1/2 to 1 teaspoon in warm water, before bed. Taste is part of the medicine, the bitterness is therapeutic.
Tablets/Capsules
1000-2000mg before bed. Convenient but misses the taste activation. Still effective.
Duration
Safe for long-term daily use. Unlike stimulant laxatives, triphala builds digestive strength rather than causing dependency.
Contraindications
- • Pregnancy, haritaki has mild stimulant properties; avoid or consult practitioner
- • Diarrhea, stop during acute diarrhea; triphala is for sluggish digestion
- • Dehydration, ensure adequate water intake
- • Very few other contraindications, this is a remarkably safe formula
