Reishi (Ling Zhi)

The "mushroom of immortality" — so rare in the wild it was reserved for emperors. Now cultivated and accessible, but still one of the most profound medicines on earth.

Quick Facts

Latin Name

Ganoderma lucidum / G. lingzhi

Chinese Name

Ling Zhi (靈芝) — Spirit Mushroom

Primary Use

Immune modulation, liver support, stress, spirit

Form

Extract, powder, tincture (dual-extract best)

What It Is

Reishi is a woody polypore mushroom that grows on hardwood trees. In ancient China, it was so rare and revered that finding one was considered a sign of good fortune. It appears throughout Chinese art as a symbol of longevity.

Today it's cultivated on logs or in controlled environments, making this "king of mushrooms" accessible to everyone. But quality varies enormously — extraction method matters.

How It Works

  • Beta-glucans: Polysaccharides that modulate (not just stimulate) immune function
  • Triterpenes: Bitter compounds that support liver detoxification and reduce inflammation
  • Adaptogenic: Helps the nervous system find balance — calming without sedating
  • Hepatoprotective: Research shows liver-protective and liver-regenerating effects

The TCM Perspective

In Chinese medicine, reishi "nourishes the Heart and calms the Shen (spirit)." It's used for insomnia, anxiety, and what modern people might call spiritual disconnection. The name Ling Zhi literally means "spirit plant."

It's considered a "superior herb" — safe for long-term use, building vitality without side effects. Taoist monks used it for cultivation practices, believing it supported spiritual development.

When to Use It

Immune modulation

Not just boosting — balancing. Good for autoimmune and allergic conditions

Liver support

During detox, after toxin exposure, elevated liver enzymes

Stress and anxiety

Calming adaptogen — helps restore parasympathetic tone

Sleep issues

Not a sedative — works over time to reset sleep patterns

Why Extraction Matters

Raw reishi powder is largely indigestible — the chitin cell walls lock in the active compounds. Proper extraction is essential:

Hot water extraction: Releases beta-glucans (immune compounds)

Alcohol extraction: Releases triterpenes (liver/spirit compounds)

Dual extraction: Both methods combined — the gold standard

Dosing Protocol

Dual Extract

1-2g daily, or 30-60 drops tincture, 2x daily

Traditional Decoction

3-15g sliced reishi simmered 2+ hours — strong and bitter

Timing

Evening is traditional — supports sleep and recovery

Effects build over weeks/months. Safe for long-term daily use. The bitterness indicates triterpene content.

Contraindications

  • Blood thinners: May enhance anticoagulant effects
  • Surgery: Stop 2 weeks before due to potential blood-thinning
  • Low blood pressure: May lower it further
  • Immunosuppressants: May modulate immunity in unpredictable ways
