What It Is

Cordyceps is an entomopathogenic fungus — it infects insects, kills them slowly, and erupts a fruiting body from the corpse. Wild Cordyceps sinensisspecifically targets the ghost moth caterpillar buried in the soil of the Tibetan, Bhutanese, and Nepali highlands. The Tibetan name yarsagumbameans "summer-grass-winter-worm."

Wild yarsagumba is the most expensive medicinal mushroom on Earth — current prices run $20,000-100,000/kg, and it has been overharvested into ecological collapse. The honest market alternatives are cultivated Cordyceps militaris (grown on rice or millet) and Cs-4, a mycelium strain selected from authentic wild sinensis and fermented in tanks.

Sinensis vs Militaris vs Cs-4

  • Cordyceps militaris — much higher cordycepin content (the active nucleoside). Cultivated, sustainable, the choice for adenosine/ATP-driven mechanisms.

How It Works

The active fraction is a mix of nucleosides (cordycepin, adenosine), polysaccharides, sterols, and cordycepic acid (mannitol). Cordycepin is the molecule most discussed; it's a structural analog of adenosine with broad metabolic effects.
