Tradition

Native American, European, Chinese

Primary Use

Tapeworms, roundworms (safe for children)

Form

Raw seeds, seed butter, oil

What It Is

Pumpkin seeds (Cucurbita pepo) have been used to expel tapeworms and roundworms for centuries across multiple continents. The German Commission E (their FDA equivalent for herbs) officially approves pumpkin seeds for treating tapeworm infections.

The active compound is cucurbitin, an amino acid found in the thin membrane between the seed and shell. This is why raw, unprocessed seeds with the coating intact are essential, roasted or shelled "pepitas" lose much of their antiparasitic effect.

How It Works

  • Cucurbitin paralysis: Paralyzes tapeworms and roundworms without killing them, they release their grip on the intestinal wall
  • Purgative follow-up: Traditional protocols follow pumpkin seeds with castor oil to flush out paralyzed worms before they recover
  • Zinc content: High zinc supports immune function and is itself mildly antiparasitic
  • Safe mechanism: Because it paralyzes rather than poisons, it's extremely safe for humans including children

Traditional Use

Native American: Multiple tribes used pumpkin seeds as routine deworming medicine. Seeds were chewed or ground and mixed with water.

European: Traditional protocol: eat large quantity of seeds on empty stomach, wait 2-3 hours, then take castor oil to purge. Still used in Germany today.

Chinese medicine:Pumpkin seeds ("Nan Gua Zi") used for tapeworms and schistosomiasis. Often combined with areca nut for stronger effect.

Dosing Protocol

Adults (Traditional Protocol)

200-500g raw seeds (with skin), ground or chewed to paste, on empty stomach. Follow with castor oil 2-3 hours later.

Children

50-100g for ages 3-5, 100-150g for ages 6-12. Ground into paste, mixed with honey. No castor oil for young children.

Maintenance

1-2 tablespoons raw seeds daily for prevention. Can be added to smoothies or eaten as snack.

Contraindications

  • • Very few, this is one of the safest antiparasitics
  • • Seed/nut allergies, rare but possible
  • • Castor oil portion: not for pregnant women or young children
  • • Large doses may cause digestive upset, start smaller
