What It Is
Papaya seeds are the black, peppery seeds found inside the papaya fruit. While most people discard them, traditional medicine systems in tropical regions have used them for parasites for centuries.
The key compounds are carpaine (an alkaloid), benzyl isothiocyanate (similar to mustard oil), and papain (a proteolytic enzyme). Together they paralyze, digest, and expel intestinal worms. Unlike many antiparasitics, papaya seeds have actual human clinical data.
How It Works
- →Carpaine paralysis: This alkaloid paralyzes intestinal worms, preventing them from holding onto the gut wall
- →Papain digestion: The enzyme literally digests the outer coating of worms, weakening their defenses
- →Benzyl isothiocyanate: Directly toxic to parasites, similar to how mustard seed compounds work
- →Myrosinase: Enzyme that enhances the antiparasitic compounds when seeds are chewed or ground
Traditional Use
Caribbean: Children given papaya seeds with honey as routine deworming. Still common practice in Jamaica, Trinidad, and throughout the islands.
Nigeria study (2007): Randomized controlled trial: children given papaya seeds in honey showed 77% parasite clearance vs. 0% in placebo group. Published in Journal of Medicinal Food.
Central America: Indigenous peoples use papaya seeds for both parasites and as contraceptive (in men, it temporarily reduces sperm motility).
Dosing Protocol
Fresh Seeds (Traditional)
1 tablespoon fresh seeds, chewed or blended with honey, on empty stomach. Adults: 1 tbsp. Children: 1 tsp.
