What It Is
Phosphatidylserine is one of the four major phospholipids in the human cell membrane (alongside phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylethanolamine, and sphingomyelin). It sits asymmetrically — almost exclusively on the inner leaflet of the bilayer. When a cell flips PS to its outer leaflet, it is broadcasting an "eat me" signal to macrophages: a programmed cell death announcement. That same molecule, supplied orally, supports neuronal membrane integrity and throttles the cortisol response to stress.
The original clinical trials in the 1980s and early 1990s used bovine cortex PS (BC-PS). After BSE concerns, the industry pivoted to soy-lecithin PS (S-PS) and more recently sunflower-lecithin PS, which is non-GMO and allergen-free. Cognitive-benefit claims approved by the FDA in 2003 are based primarily on the soy-derived molecule.
How It Works
Four Mechanisms
