Manjistha
The premier blood-purifying herb of Ayurveda. When toxins accumulate in blood and lymph, manifesting as skin issues, stagnation, and inflammation, this red root clears the way.
Quick Facts
Latin Name
Rubia cordifolia
Family
Rubiaceae (same as coffee)
Primary Use
Blood purification, lymph drainage, skin conditions
Form
Powder, capsule, tincture
What It Is
Manjistha is a climbing plant whose root produces a distinctive red dye, historically used to color fabrics in India. In Ayurveda, this red color reflects its affinity for blood and the cardiovascular system.
It's the primary "rakta shodhaka" (blood purifier) in Ayurveda, used whenever toxins accumulate in the blood and manifest as skin problems, inflammation, or stagnation.
How It Works
- →Lymphatic drainage: Moves stagnant lymph, especially in the pelvis and lower body
- →Heavy metal binding: Research shows it binds to and helps eliminate heavy metals
- →Anti-inflammatory: Reduces inflammation in blood vessels and tissues
- →Hepatoprotective: Supports liver function and detoxification
The Ayurvedic Perspective
Manjistha cools and cleanses "Rakta Dhatu" (blood tissue) and "Rasa Dhatu" (lymph/plasma). It's particularly good for "Pitta" conditions, heat, inflammation, redness, skin eruptions.
The logic: when blood becomes toxic or "hot," the body pushes impurities to the skin. Manjistha clears the blood, so the skin clears. This is the Ayurvedic understanding of acne, eczema, and psoriasis.
When to Use It
Chronic skin conditions
Acne, eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, especially "hot" or inflamed conditions
Lymphatic stagnation
Swelling, puffiness, sluggish lymph, particularly in lower body
Heavy metal detox
Binding and elimination of accumulated metals
Menstrual issues
Clots, stagnation, pelvic congestion, moves "stuck blood"
A Note on Red Urine
Manjistha can turn urine orange or reddish, this is the red pigment being excreted, not blood. It's harmless and actually shows the herb is working. Don't be alarmed if you notice this color change.
