What It Is
Cleavers is the common "sticky weed" that clings to clothing and animal fur. It grows abundantly in spring and has been used as a lymphatic tonic in European herbalism for centuries.
What makes it special is its affinity for the lymphatic system, the body's waste-removal network that doesn't have its own pump. When lymph is stagnant, waste accumulates. Cleavers helps get it moving.
How It Works
- →Lymphatic stimulant: Promotes lymph flow, helping clear waste from tissues
- →Diuretic: Increases urine output, helping eliminate what the lymph mobilizes
- →Alterative: Gently shifts the body's terrain toward health over time
- →Cooling: Has a cooling, anti-inflammatory quality, good for hot conditions
Traditional Use
European herbalists used cleavers as a "spring tonic", the first green medicine after winter. It was believed to clean the blood after months of heavy, preserved foods.
Specifically, it was used for swollen lymph nodes, skin conditions (especially eczema and psoriasis), urinary problems, and as a cancer-support herb, likely due to its lymphatic effects.
When to Use It
Swollen lymph nodes
The signature indication, tender, enlarged glands especially in neck and armpits
Chronic skin conditions
Eczema, psoriasis, acne, especially when linked to poor elimination
Water retention and puffiness
Gentle diuretic that also moves lymph, addresses both
Spring cleansing
Traditional spring tonic, fresh juice is ideal when the plant is abundant
Dosing Protocol
Fresh Juice (best)
1-2 tbsp fresh juice, 2-3x daily, juice the whole plant
Fresh Plant Tincture
30-60 drops, 3x daily, must be made from fresh plant
Cold Infusion
Large handful of fresh herb in cold water overnight, drink throughout day
