What It Is

Zinc is the second most abundant trace mineral in the human body after iron. It is required for the structural integrity and catalytic activity of more than 300 enzymes and approximately 2,000 transcription factors. Zinc-finger proteins, named for the metal that holds them in their characteristic shape, regulate gene expression across virtually every cellular process. The body has no dedicated zinc storage; intake must be continuous through diet.

An estimated 17% of the world's population is zinc-deficient. In developed countries, the picture is more about subtle insufficiency in elderly, vegetarians, alcohol users, athletes, and people on chronic acid suppression (PPIs reduce zinc absorption significantly).

Form Comparison

  • Zinc picolinate — picolinic acid (vitamin B6 metabolite) chelate. Best absorbed in head-to-head studies (Barrie et al.). Default choice.
  • Zinc bisglycinate — amino acid chelate, very gentle on the gut. Excellent alternative for sensitive stomachs.
  • Zinc citrate — well absorbed, popular in European formulations.

Contraindications & Cautions

  • Antibiotics: Reduces absorption of tetracyclines and fluoroquinolones; separate by 2 hours.
  • Penicillamine, bisphosphonates: Reduces absorption; separate by 2+ hours.
  • Empty stomach nausea: Always take with food, especially picolinate.
  • Intranasal zinc: Permanent anosmia (loss of smell) reported with intranasal zinc gel products. Oral lozenges are safe; nasal sprays are not.
  • Pregnancy: 11-12 mg RDA in pregnancy; do not exceed 40 mg/day total without supervision.
  • HDL reduction: Chronic high-dose zinc lowers HDL; monitor lipid panel.
  • Wilson's disease: Zinc is used therapeutically here at much higher doses; coordinate with hepatology.
