Diatomaceous Earth

Fossilized algae with microscopic razor edges. It doesn't poison parasites — it physically shreds their exoskeletons while being harmless to you.

Quick Facts

Also Called

DE, Fossil Shell Flour, Diatomite

Tradition

Modern (agricultural use centuries old)

Primary Use

Mechanical parasite killing, silica supplementation

Form

Food-grade powder (ONLY food-grade)

What It Is

Diatomaceous earth is the fossilized remains of diatoms — microscopic aquatic organisms with silica shells. When these organisms died millions of years ago, their shells accumulated into thick deposits now mined as DE.

Under a microscope, DE looks like tiny cylinders covered in razor-sharp edges. To insects and parasites with exoskeletons, it's like crawling through broken glass — it punctures their protective coating, causing them to dehydrate and die. To soft-tissued creatures like humans, it's a harmless powder.

How It Works

  • Mechanical action: Sharp silica edges puncture the waxy coating of parasites and insects, causing fatal dehydration
  • Absorbent: DE absorbs lipids from pest exoskeletons, accelerating dehydration
  • Gut scrubbing: Mild abrasive action helps scrape mucoid plaque and debris from intestinal walls
  • Silica source: Provides bioavailable silica for hair, skin, nails, and connective tissue

Traditional Use

Agriculture: Used for centuries to protect stored grain from insects. Ancient Egyptians may have used it in grain storage.

Modern livestock: Added to animal feed to control internal parasites and improve feed efficiency. FDA approved for use in livestock.

Human use: More recent application. Some take it for parasites, heavy metal binding, and silica supplementation. Less traditional evidence than herbal antiparasitics.

Dosing Protocol

Starting Dose

1 teaspoon in water or smoothie, morning on empty stomach. Must use FOOD-GRADE only.

Full Dose

Work up to 1-2 tablespoons daily over 1-2 weeks. Take with plenty of water — DE is very absorbent.

Duration

30-90 days for parasite protocols. Some take ongoing for silica. Take breaks every 2-3 months.

Contraindications

  • • NEVER use pool-grade or industrial DE — it can cause silicosis
  • • Lung conditions — don't inhale the powder; mix carefully
  • • Dehydration risk — must drink extra water while using
  • • Constipation — can worsen if drainage pathways aren't open
  • • Pregnancy/breastfeeding — insufficient safety data
