Ashwagandha: Indian Ginseng
The name means "smell of the horse" — and the strength of one. Two thousand years before the word adaptogen existed, Ayurveda was using Withania somniferato rebuild burned-out nervous systems and put dendrites back on stripped neurons.
Quick Facts
Withania somnifera
Solanaceae (nightshade)
Root (preferred); leaf in some extracts
Warm, heavy, oily, slightly bitter
Adaptogen, nervine, neurotrophic, anabolic, thyroid-supportive
Cortisol crash, insomnia from overstimulation, dendrite regrowth, hypothyroid
What It Is
Ashwagandha is a small shrub from the Indian subcontinent. The root, when fresh, smells faintly of horse sweat — hence the Sanskrit ashva-gandha. The Latin epithet somnifera("sleep-bringing") names its other great traditional function: it does not sedate, it deconditions the wired-but-tired state and lets sleep return on its own.
In the Charaka Samhita it is classified as a rasayana — a rejuvenative that restores the deeper tissues (dhatu) over months of use. It is also named a medhya (intellect-enhancing) herb, but its effect on the brain is structural rather than stimulant.
Extract Politics: KSM-66 vs Sensoril vs Whole Root
- • KSM-66 — root only, ~5% withanolides, low alkaloids. Most clinical trials use this. Best general-purpose.
- • Sensoril — root + leaf, ~10% withanolides. Higher sedative load; better for severe insomnia, less for daytime function.
- • Whole root powder — traditional. Lower potency, gentler, food-like. The classical Ayurvedic delivery is in warm milk with ghee.
How It Works
The active class is the withanolides — a steroidal lactone family unique to this plant. Withaferin A, withanolide A, and withanoside IV are the three most-studied.
Four Mechanisms
Drops serum cortisol ~28% versus placebo at 600 mg/day KSM-66 in chronically stressed adults (Chandrasekhar et al., 2012). Works on the limbic side, not as a glucocorticoid receptor antagonist.
Withanoside IV and withanolide A regenerate axons and dendrites in cortical neurons (Kuboyama et al., 2005). One of the few documented natural agents that physically rebuilds neural tree structure.
Raises T4 and free T3 in subclinical hypothyroid patients (Sharma et al., 2018). Useful in chronic-stress hypothyroidism; avoid in hyperthyroid.
Direct binding at the GABA-A receptor explains the somnifera effect — quieting without the sledgehammer of valerian or skullcap.
Strength and recovery data are also strong: increases in VO2 max, grip strength, and testosterone in trained men. The anabolic signal is real and tied to mTOR modulation.
Kundalini & Awakening Support
In Biology of Kundalini, Jana Dixon places ashwagandha among the foundational ojas-builders — the herbs that restore tissue depth after the high-current phase has stripped the system. Awakening is catabolic before it is anabolic; ashwagandha is what you take during the rebuild.
The dendritic regrowth data is what makes it more than a generic adaptogen. After the pruning phase of a real kundalini event — and after any severe traumatic stress — cortical neurons need to put their branches back on. Withanoside IV is one of the few molecules with peer-reviewed evidence of doing exactly that.
Where It Fits in the Arc
- • Cortisol crash phase — restores HPA setpoint after weeks/months of high output.
- • Insomnia from overstimulation — calms without sedating; takes weeks to land fully.
- • Dendrite rebuild — pair with bacopa and ashitaba; this is the structural triad.
- • Ojas / depth restoration — the heavy, oily, building quality is exactly what is depleted.
- • Thyroid recovery — chronic stress takes T3 down; ashwagandha brings it back.
Detox Benefits
Ashwagandha is not a primary detox herb — it is a recovery herb. Its detox contribution is indirect but real.
- •Liver protection — withaferin A is hepatoprotective against acetaminophen, alcohol, and chemotherapy damage.
- •Glutathione preservation — spares the master antioxidant during oxidative stress.
- •Heavy-metal modulation — animal studies show reduction of lead-induced neural damage.
- •HPA reset — without HPA stability, every other detox pathway runs at half capacity.
Dosing Protocol
KSM-66 Standardized Extract
The most-validated form. Root only, ~5% withanolides.
- • 300-600 mg/day, divided AM and PM
- • Take with food; fat-soluble withanolides absorb better with a meal
- • Effects compound — assess at 8 weeks, not 8 days
Sensoril Extract
- • 125-250 mg, evening only
- • Stronger somnifera profile; can over-sedate in daytime use
- • Best for cortisol-driven insomnia
Traditional Whole Root Powder
- • 3-6 g/day in warm milk with ghee and a pinch of cardamom (classical ashwagandha kshira paka)
- • Evening dose; deeply rasayana
- • Slower to act, more tissue-building
Tincture
- • 2-5 mL of 1:5 root tincture, 2x daily
- • Useful for acute stress windows; less ideal for long-arc rebuild than capsule or milk decoction
Contraindications & Cautions
- ⚠Hyperthyroid / Graves: Can push thyroid output higher. Contraindicated unless under endocrinology care.
- ⚠Nightshade sensitivity: Solanaceae family — can flare reactive arthritis, certain autoimmune conditions.
- ⚠Pregnancy: Traditionally avoided. Some sources cite abortifacient potential at high doses.
- ⚠Sedatives, benzodiazepines, alcohol: Potentiates CNS depression. Reduce dose of either.
- ⚠Hormone-sensitive cancers: Mixed estrogenic data; consult oncology before use.
- ⚠Hepatotoxicity reports: Rare idiosyncratic liver injury cases have been reported. Stop if RUQ pain or jaundice develops.
- ⚠Autoimmune (Hashimoto's, lupus, MS): Immune modulation goes both ways — use under practitioner guidance.
