What is EMF?

EMF — electromagnetic fields — is the umbrella term for radiation produced by electrical devices and wireless technology. It exists on a spectrum:

  • ELF
    Extremely Low Frequency (3-3000 Hz): Power lines, electrical wiring, appliances. Magnetic fields that penetrate buildings and bodies.
  • RF
    Radiofrequency (3 kHz - 300 GHz): WiFi (2.4 GHz, 5 GHz), cell phones, Bluetooth, smart meters, cell towers, 5G (up to 39 GHz and beyond).
  • DE
    Dirty Electricity: High-frequency transients on electrical wiring from dimmers, solar inverters, CFLs, and electronics.

The telecom industry will tell you EMF is "non-ionizing" — meaning it doesn't have enough energy to break chemical bonds like X-rays do. This framing implies safety. But it's a red herring.

Key insight: Non-ionizing doesn't mean non-biological. Research shows EMF affects cellular function through mechanisms that have nothing to do with ionization: voltage-gated calcium channels, oxidative stress, melatonin suppression, and DNA repair interference.

  • 10-30+ WiFi-connected devices (phones, tablets, TVs, thermostats, doorbells, speakers)
  • Bluetooth devices (headphones, speakers, keyboards, mice, wearables)
  • Cell signal penetrating walls from towers
  • Neighbors' WiFi networks (apartment buildings can have 50+ detectable networks)

Reality check: Studies estimate ambient RF radiation levels are now 10 million to 1 billion times higher than natural background levels that existed before wireless technology. Your biology evolved over millions of years without this exposure.

5G: A New Frontier

5G uses two approaches:

  • Sub-6 GHz: Similar frequencies to 4G, slightly higher. Better building penetration.
  • Millimeter wave (mmWave): 24-39+ GHz. Much higher frequency. Absorbed by skin/eyes. Requires small cells every few hundred feet because signals don't travel far.
