What It Is
Taurine is a sulfur-containing amino acid that does not get incorporated into proteins. Instead, it accumulates in concentrated free pools in specific tissues, heart, brain, retina, white blood cells, platelets. The body synthesizes it from cysteine via the CSAD enzyme, but the synthesis rate is slow and limited. Newborns, vegetarians, and individuals under chronic stress are functionally taurine-deficient.
Dietary sources are exclusively animal: shellfish (highest), dark meat, fish, dairy. Plants contain essentially none. This is why infant formula has been taurine-supplemented since the 1980s after a Japanese study found retinal degeneration in taurine-deficient cats. Cats cannot synthesize taurine at all and must consume it, the warning case for human conditional essentiality.
Recent research from David Sinclair's lab and others (Singh et al. 2023, published in Science) showed that blood taurine levels decline ~80% with age, and supplementation extended lifespan in middle-aged mice. The longevity implications are still developing but the data is genuinely striking.
How It Works
Four Mechanisms
Acts as a partial agonist at GABA-A receptors and at glycine receptors. Produces calming, anxiolytic effect without sedation, dependence, or tolerance, the safety profile benzodiazepines lack. This is the basis for its use in anxiety, insomnia, and acute stress.
Stabilizes cardiomyocyte calcium fluxes through the sarcoplasmic reticulum. Reduces atrial and ventricular ectopy in arrhythmia trials. Cardiac taurine concentration is 1000-fold higher than blood; depletion is a documented driver of dilated cardiomyopathy in cats and at-risk humans.
Conjugates cholic and chenodeoxycholic acid to taurocholate, the water-soluble form needed to emulsify fat in the duodenum. Glycine conjugation is the alternative; people with low taurine convert bile poorly and malabsorb fat-soluble vitamins.
Required for mitochondrial tRNA modification; deficiency causes mitochondrial myopathy (MELAS syndrome). Acts as cellular osmolyte to stabilize cell volume under stress. The recent longevity data ties to mitochondrial function.
Best clinical evidence: congestive heart failure (Azuma et al. 1985, multiple follow-ups), anxiety reduction (Murakami et al.), insulin resistance in metabolic syndrome, and the recent Singh longevity work. Energy drink claims are mostly hype but the underlying cardiac and neurologic data is solid.
