Oregano Oil
The most potent natural antimicrobial available without prescription. Studies show it outperforms many antibiotics, but it's not for casual use.
Quick Facts
Also Called
Origanum vulgare, Wild Oregano, Oil of Oregano
Tradition
Greek, Mediterranean, Middle Eastern
Primary Use
Antiparasitic, antifungal, antibacterial
Form
Essential oil (diluted), enteric capsules
What It Is
Oregano oil is extracted from wild oregano (Origanum vulgare), not the culinary oregano in your spice rack. The wild Mediterranean species contains high concentrations of carvacrol and thymol, two of the most antimicrobial compounds in nature.
This is not a gentle herb. Oregano oil is essentially a natural antibiotic with broad-spectrum activity against parasites, bacteria, fungi, and some viruses. It's powerful enough to damage your gut microbiome if used carelessly.
How It Works
- →Membrane destruction: Carvacrol and thymol dissolve the cell membranes of parasites and pathogens, killing them on contact
- →Biofilm penetration: One of the few compounds that can reach organisms hiding inside biofilm communities
- →Anti-Candida: Studies show it's as effective as nystatin against Candida albicans
- →Resistance unlikely: Multiple mechanisms make it hard for organisms to develop resistance (unlike single-target antibiotics)
Traditional Use
Ancient Greece:Hippocrates used oregano for digestive and respiratory ailments. The name comes from Greek "oros" (mountain) and "ganos" (joy), "joy of the mountain."
Middle Ages:Used to preserve food and meat, they didn't know about bacteria, but they knew oregano stopped spoilage.
Modern research: Studies confirm activity against Giardia, Blastocystis, Entamoeba, various bacteria including drug-resistant strains, and multiple Candida species.
