Milk Thistle (Silymarin)
The most studied liver herb in the world. When you need to protect, repair, or regenerate liver cells, this is where you start.
Quick Facts
Latin Name
Silybum marianum
Active Compound
Silymarin (silybin, silychristin, silydianin)
Primary Use
Liver protection, regeneration, detox support
Form
Capsule, phytosome, tincture, seed
What It Is
Milk thistle is a flowering plant in the daisy family, native to the Mediterranean. The seeds contain silymarin — a complex of flavonolignans that has been used for liver conditions for over 2,000 years.
Unlike many herbal remedies, milk thistle has serious research behind it. Over 10,000 studies. Used in European hospitals for mushroom poisoning (Amanita). This is the rare herb where traditional use and modern science fully align.
How It Works
- →Hepatoprotection: Silymarin stabilizes liver cell membranes, preventing toxins from entering cells
- →Regeneration: Stimulates protein synthesis in liver cells, actually helping the liver rebuild itself
- →Glutathione boost: Increases glutathione levels in the liver by up to 35% — your master antioxidant
- →Anti-fibrotic: Helps prevent and potentially reverse liver fibrosis by inhibiting stellate cell activation
Traditional Use
The ancient Greeks and Romans used milk thistle for liver and gallbladder conditions. The plant's white-veined leaves were said to carry the milk of the Virgin Mary — hence the name.
In European folk medicine, it was the go-to for jaundice, hepatitis, and protecting against liver damage from alcohol. German Commission E — the gold standard for herbal medicine — officially approved it for liver support.
When to Use It
Daily liver maintenance
If you're exposed to environmental toxins, medications, or alcohol — baseline protection
During detox protocols
Protects liver cells while you're mobilizing and eliminating toxins
After alcohol or medication exposure
Helps liver recover from acute stress. Classic hangover protocol ingredient
Elevated liver enzymes
Research shows it can help normalize ALT and AST levels
Dosing Protocol
Standard Extract (80% Silymarin)
200-400mg, 2-3x daily with meals
Phytosome Form (Silybin-PC)
120-240mg, 2x daily — much better absorption
Acute Support (hangover, toxin exposure)
400-600mg immediately, repeat in 4-6 hours
Standard silymarin has poor bioavailability (~20-50%). Phytosome forms (bound to phosphatidylcholine) absorb 4-10x better.
Contraindications
- • Hormone-sensitive conditions: Silymarin has weak estrogenic activity — caution with breast cancer, endometriosis
- • Ragweed allergy: Milk thistle is in the same family — can trigger reactions
- • Drug interactions: May affect CYP enzymes — consult if on medications metabolized by liver
- • Pregnancy: Generally considered safe, but check with practitioner
