What It Is

Amygdalin is a cyanogenic glycoside — a sugar molecule with a cyanide group tucked inside, held inert until an enzyme cleaves the bond. It is found in the seeds of the Prunus family (apricot, peach, plum, bitter almond, cherry) and at lower concentrations in apple seeds. Ernst T. Krebs Sr. isolated it from apricot kernels in 1923; his son Ernst Krebs Jr. produced a semi-synthetic, more soluble version in 1952 called Laetrile.

The compound entered the cancer literature on the back of the Krebs "trophoblastic theory of cancer" — that tumor tissue is enzymatically distinct from normal tissue in lacking rhodanese (which detoxifies cyanide) while being rich in beta-glucosidase (which releases it). Whether or not the full theory holds, the biochemistry of selective enzyme distribution is real and has been independently measured.

The Krebs Hypothesis in One Paragraph

Healthy cells contain rhodanese, the enzyme that converts cyanide to harmless thiocyanate (excreted in urine). Tumor cells are deficient in rhodanese but rich in beta-glucosidase, the enzyme that cleaves amygdalin to release cyanide and benzaldehyde. In the Krebs model, the cyanide therefore concentrates inside tumor tissue while healthy tissue neutralizes it. Critics note that beta-glucosidase distribution is more complex; supporters note that gut bacterial beta-glucosidase plays a major role, which is why oral dosing matters more than intravenous.

How It Works

Whether one accepts the full Krebs framework or not, the molecular chemistry is uncontested. Amygdalin in the gut is hydrolyzed by bacterial beta-glucosidase to prunasin, then to mandelonitrile, which spontaneously decomposes to benzaldehyde and hydrogen cyanide. In healthy systems, rhodanese (a mitochondrial enzyme) and sulfur donors (B12, methionine, cysteine) convert HCN to thiocyanate within minutes.

Four Mechanisms (As Proposed)

Selective cyanide release in tumor tissue

The original Krebs claim — beta-glucosidase concentrated in tumor tissue liberates cyanide preferentially in malignant cells. Healthy cells with abundant rhodanese neutralize it.

2.
Benzaldehyde cytotoxicity

The other amygdalin breakdown product. Benzaldehyde is selectively cytotoxic to several cancer cell lines in vitro at concentrations achievable after amygdalin hydrolysis.

3.
Apoptosis induction

Modern in-vitro work (e.g., Chen et al. 2013, Cell Biology International) shows amygdalin induces apoptosis in HeLa and prostate cancer lines via Bax/Bcl-2 modulation, independent of any cyanide pathway.

4.
Anti-inflammatory and analgesic

Amygdalin downregulates TNF-alpha and IL-6 in inflammation models; this is the basis of its traditional Chinese use as ku xing ren (bitter almond) for cough and asthma at small doses.

Kundalini & Awakening Support

Dixon's framing places B17 in the larger pattern of phytochemicals the modern food-stripped diet has lost. The awakening body, by her account, is more sensitive to cellular dysregulation — the metabolic furnace can amplify damaged cells just as readily as healthy ones. The traditional diet contained cyanogenic glycosides from many sources (cassava, lima beans, sorghum, millet, stone fruit kernels) at small regular doses.

In the kundalini context, B17 serves three speculated functions:

  • Cellular surveillance support — the awakening metabolism throws off more damaged and senescent cells; B17 is hypothesized to assist their selective removal.
  • Phytochemical pattern restoration — Dixon argues that lost-diet compounds are part of the metabolic toolkit awakening depends on.
  • Rhodanese / sulfur-pathway exercise — small regular cyanogen exposure tones the rhodanese-thiocyanate detoxification axis the way intermittent stressors tone any biological system.

Dixon's recommendation is always at the food-level dose — 1 to 2 apricot kernels per day with adequate B12 and sulfur cofactors, never the high-dose IV laetrile protocols.

Detox Benefits

The detox case for B17 at food doses is modest and indirect: it exercises the rhodanese sulfur-conjugation pathway, contributes to a broader phytochemical input the modern diet lacks, and the kernel itself supplies usable magnesium, B vitamins, and protein.

  • Rhodanese pathway tone — small repeated cyanogen exposure keeps the sulfur conjugation system primed; this is the same axis that handles dietary cyanide from cassava and broccoli sprouts.
  • Apoptotic clearance support — speculative but the literature exists; senescent and pre-malignant cells may be more vulnerable to amygdalin-induced apoptosis.
  • Whole-kernel nutrient density — magnesium, vitamin E, B17, and easily-absorbed plant protein from a food the modern Western diet eliminated.

Dosing Protocol

Food-Dose Apricot Kernel (Dixon Standard)

  • • 1-2 bitter apricot kernels per day (~25-50 mg amygdalin, ~100 mg total B17)
  • • Start with one kernel, work up over 1-2 weeks
  • • Always with B12 (1000 mcg methylcobalamin) and a sulfur-rich meal (egg, allium, cruciferous)
  • • Never on an empty stomach during initial adaptation

Maintenance / General Use

  • • 2-5 kernels daily, spread across the day, never more than 2 at one sitting
  • • Co-supplement zinc 15-30 mg and vitamin C 1-3 g daily

Bitter Almond / Other Sources

  • • Bitter almonds are higher in amygdalin than apricot kernels and require even smaller doses
  • • Apple seeds, peach pits — never crack and consume in quantity; the dose is unpredictable
  • • Sweet almonds contain essentially no amygdalin and are not therapeutic

Clinical / IV Laetrile Protocols

  • • Historically used in clinics in Mexico (Hoxsey, Bradford), Germany, and the Caribbean
  • • 3-9 g IV laetrile daily, paired with B15, enzymes, and high-dose vitamin C
  • • Cannot be safely self-administered; requires medical supervision with cyanide monitoring
  • • Not legal as a medical claim in the US/EU — informational only

Contraindications & Cautions

  • Acute cyanide toxicity is real: Overdosing apricot kernels can cause acute cyanide poisoning. Case reports document hospitalization at 10-20 kernels in a single sitting. Stay strictly inside the food-dose window.
  • Children: Lower body weight, lower rhodanese capacity. Apricot kernels are not for children, period.
  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding: Cyanide crosses the placenta and into breast milk. Absolute contraindication.
  • B12 / sulfur deficiency: Rhodanese requires sulfur donors (B12, cysteine, methionine). Deficient individuals detoxify cyanide poorly. Address deficiency before starting any B17 protocol.
  • Liver disease: Compromised rhodanese function. Avoid or use only under medical supervision.
  • Combining with high-dose vitamin C IV: Some practitioners report increased reactivity; the combination is for clinic settings only.
  • Symptoms of cyanide exposure: Headache, nausea, dizziness, confusion, weakness, bitter almond taste in mouth — stop immediately and seek medical care.
