Jergens Ultra Healing is a widely used everyday body lotion with a preservative system that stands out. DMDM Hydantoin releases formaldehyde as its mechanism of action: it is not a trace contamination issue but a designed function. Formaldehyde is an IARC Group 1 human carcinogen. The EU Commission tightened the mandatory ‘releases formaldehyde’ label warning threshold to 10 ppm in 2022, a 50× reduction from the prior threshold. The US FDA requires no equivalent warning. The formula also contains methylparaben and propylparaben (EU-restricted preservatives) and fragrance (undisclosed allergen blend). Petrolatum and dimethicone are the functional occlusives and are both cleared.
